Answering the Bells Trip to the Beach The Ride Snow Day The Old Man of Space Kayak Attack

Fiction By Alfred Thompson
I recently decided to try my hand at writing fiction. While I want to write
the great American novel I thought it might be a good idea to start with short
stories. Here I will post some of them as I write them. Not that I expect anyone
to read them but, hey, why not?
- Answering the Bells A few hours in the life
of firemen. A short
story I wrote some time ago based on things I saw as a fire buff growing up
in Brooklyn. 02 May 2004
- Trip to the Beach An old man makes a
melancholy trip to the beach to turns out to have an unexpected and pleasant
surprise. 13 June 2004
- The Ride A warm day, a hot red convertible and
the first drive of spring. A narrative account of an imaginary drive. 14 May 2004
- Snow Day Teachers enjoy a surprise day off
from school too. They just enjoy it differently from their students. 14
May 2004
- The Old Man of Space A first attempt at science
fiction. Set in the near future, a space pilot gets ready to retire. [I know
this one needs work. I've decided to rest it a bit and come back to it
later. If you have suggestions let me know.] 10 May 2004
- Kayak Attack This is an idea that just came to
me one day while paddling my kayak. I'm not sure where it goes. Is the man
in the kayak a good guy or a bad guy? Who or what is in the house on the
island? How does the man in the kayak get in and what does he do inside? How
does he get a way? Or does he? When I figure out the answers to those
questions I'll write some more. 01 October 2004
